If you want to—

rediscover your creative spark / join the war against AI slop / stare at your screen a little less / extract stanzas from your mess / recover your attention span / think deeply again / look forward to getting the mail / tell your story / see eternity in the ordinary / make something beautiful

—this is for you.

You’ve probably felt it: the emptiness when you put your phone down. It gnaws at you; it commands you to return to the screen. You must reject this voice—your humanity is at stake.

My years of writing have taught me that creativity is the antidote to overconsumption. Philosopher Josef Pieper claims we must “be active oneself in artistic creation, producing shapes and forms for the eye to see.” Beauty might save the world, but we have a part to play in creating it.

Before we create, we must pause. When I listen to the birds or observe Orion’s Belt twinkling above me, something changes. My heartbeat slows, I breathe more deeply, I decipher the timbre of God’s voice. Offline Mail Club is your monthly invitation to also pause and notice.

You have a story that only you can tell, but words can be shy creatures; they refuse to emerge if you are distracted. When you give them the space and silence to speak, something divine occurs. Stories help us make sense of the world. Madeleine L’Engle says, “The discipline of creation, be it to paint, compose, write, is an effort towards wholeness.” Stories also help us make sense of ourselves.

Starting from a blank page is hard. That’s why I started Living Poet Society: to give you a jump start for your artistic engine, an instruction manual for your journey, a starter log for your creative fire. Each letter includes the tools you need to hit the ground walking; writing is not a speed sport.

Your story is out there. Catch it if you can.

"If there were only one meaning for the words, the first interpreter would find it, and all other listeners would have neither the toil of seeking nor the pleasure of finding." - St. Ephrem the Syrian, also known as “The Harp of the Holy Spirit” for the beauty of his writing. He is the patron saint of poets.
